Robert Downey Jr. wants to teach you math!

Robert Downey Jr. has been all over the publicity circuit to hype up The Avengers. Browsing his various photo ops, we noticed an unexpected constant: When waving to crowds or paparazzi, RDJ often holds up a different number of fingers. Is this a signal? Is he silently alerting us to his prediction for his film’s worldwide box office, in billions? No, we have decided that what he’s actually doing is using his red carpet time to also teach today’s grade schoolers how to do simple arithmetic. By combining some of his brandished numbers, you get a wonderful math primer that kids can learn from … while also begging their parents to take them to see The Avengers, in 3-D! Sesame Street has nothing on Iron Man.

As my math methods prof would say (and has, in fact, on his tumbr, which I am not reblogging this from so he can’t find me), this isn’t math, it’s arithmetic.

In the 19th Century having a photograph taken was a lengthy process. Frustrated by the difficulties of getting children to sit still long enough to snap a proper photo , photographers in the 1800’s conceived of a technique called “The Hidden Mother”. Draping a sheet over the mothers head in an attempt to camouflage her as a part of the furniture to better emphasize the child, the mother was then able to hold her infant and keep them still long enough for the camera to get an exposure. Vintage photographs already have a eerie feel to them, but these images of moms as cloaked phantoms take the creep factor to the next level.
